Choosing an Egg Donor

Choosing an Egg Donor in NYC

Here at NYU Langone Fertility Center (NYULFC), we understand that starting a family with the help of an egg donor is both an emotional and a medical journey. That's why we provide the highest level of discretion and support for both our patients and donors. Our dedicated in-house Donor Egg team is available to help patients, whether they are local or international, find their ideal egg donor.

Nonidentified vs. Known Egg Donor
An egg donor can be anonymous or someone you know. Known donors can be relatives or friends who have volunteered their eggs, but they can also be donors chosen through an agency that agrees to be in direct contact with the intended parents.

Some prospective parents prefer their children to have a connection with their donor. However, defining the donor’s role in your child’s life can be challenging and requires careful documentation.

On the other hand, an anonymous donor's identity is never disclosed to the intended parents. Opting for an anonymous donor provides more confidentiality and a clearly defined relationship between the donor and the intended parent.

Egg Donor Traits

When choosing an egg donor, it's important to consider various factors. Determine non-negotiable traits and areas where you're more flexible. Many intended parents start with a specific type of donor in mind but end up choosing someone unexpected. Sometimes, it's best to trust your intuition.

Physical Appearance
Physical appearance can be a factor in choosing an egg donor, as intended parents may want their children to resemble them or their family. If physical appearance isn't a priority for you, you will have a larger selection of donors to consider.

Medical History
At NYULFC, we thoroughly screen our egg donors, performing medical reviews and testing for certain health problems, infectious diseases, and potential genetic conditions, as do our egg bank partners. Even so, intended parents should consider how a donor's medical history combines with their own family history.

Personality
Choosing a donor you feel connected to is important. We suggest selecting someone you can relate to or feel like you could be friends with.

Donor Location
As you narrow down your donor search, location becomes a more important factor. Choosing a local donor will cost less than selecting one from outside of your geographical area.

Fresh vs. Frozen Eggs

When it comes to donor egg services, you have options. In a fresh egg donation cycle, a pre-screened and approved egg donor is stimulated here at NYULFC. Following the egg retrieval procedure, the donor eggs are fertilized immediately with sperm from the intended parent or a sperm donor.

This process differs from a frozen egg donation cycle, where frozen eggs from a pre-screened, approved egg donor are thawed and then fertilized with sperm from the intended parent or a sperm donor. The frozen eggs may be from a donor stimulated at NYULFC or a donor available through one of our egg bank partners, MyEggBank or Fairfax Egg Bank.

Whether you pursue a fresh or frozen egg donation cycle, our Donor Egg team will work with you to identify the best fit for your family. We offer detailed information about each donor, including photographs, their medical, social, and family history, and the results of their psychological and genetic screenings. Additionally, our donors come from diverse ethnicities, with varying physical characteristics, educational backgrounds, and creative talents.

Our Egg Donor Partners

We are proud to partner with MyEggBank and Fairfax Egg Bank. Both of these egg banks are well-known and highly rated. Like NYULFC, our partners use the latest technology and prioritize patient-centered care. This ensures that intended parents find a high-quality egg donor that meets their needs and preferences.
