Egg Freezing

Egg Freezing and Fertility Preservation in NYC

If you're not ready to start a family or are currently unable to do so, but want to keep the option open for the future, egg freezing may be a suitable choice. At NYU Langone Fertility Center (NYULFC), our fertility specialists use cutting-edge technology to preserve your fertility now, maximizing your chances of conception later.

Deciding to Freeze Your Eggs

Egg freezing enables you to delay conception, providing additional time to pursue higher education, advance your career, or concentrate on personal aspirations. It's also a viable choice for women undergoing treatments that impact fertility, like chemotherapy.

The Egg Freezing Process

At NYULFC, we break the egg freezing process down into fairly straightforward steps:

  1. New patient consultation: You’ll meet with one of our world-class fertility specialists to discuss your future family goals. We’ll perform bloodwork and an ultrasound to assess your eggs.
  2. Coordinator calls: Our Clinical Coordinator (CC) will review your lab work, consent forms, cycle costs, and payment options.
  3. Cycle orientation: Before the cycle starts, you’ll attend an Egg Freezing Orientation Class to learn more about the retrieval process.
  4. Day two start: Within 2 days of starting your period, you will visit our office for an ultrasound and blood test to verify that you are ready to start stimulation. You can then begin your at-home injections.
  5. Monitoring and injections: As you continue your injections, we’ll monitor your follicular development and hormone levels.
  6. Trigger: Around the tenth day of injections, your physician will assess whether you are ready for a trigger shot, which causes eggs to release in preparation for retrieval.
  7. Egg retrieval: You will be under general anesthesia while your eggs are retrieved by a physician, using ultrasonic guidance.
  8. Follow up: We’ll call you to share the final number of mature eggs cryopreserved following your retrieval, and will review the cryostorage plan for your eggs.

Using Your Frozen Eggs

Once you’re ready to start your family, your frozen eggs are thawed and combined with sperm to create embryos. Those embryos are then inserted into your uterus through the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process, hopefully resulting in a successful pregnancy. At NYULFC, our physicians have completed over 3,000 egg freezing cycles and perform over 450 cycles annually. You can trust that your fertility is in the best of hands.

Egg Freezing: FAQs

  • The self-pay fees for an egg freezing cycle begin at $10,250. We offer comprehensive, state-of-the-art infertility treatment at competitive rates, and our team works together with you to evaluate your payment options, including insurance coverage and patient financing programs to cover your care.

  • Our fertility specialists will use your bloodwork and ultrasound results to recommend the number of eggs to freeze. They can also estimate how many cycles might be needed to prepare for your future family goals.

  • The egg retrieval process is performed under general anesthesia, so you won't experience any pain. Most women are able to return to work the day after the egg retrieval. Any potential discomfort after the procedure can be managed with reduced activity and over-the-counter pain medication.

  • Technically speaking, your eggs can be frozen for as long as you want and still be viable. The egg freezing process involves using special substances that prevent ice crystals from forming that could damage your eggs during freezing and thawing.

  • If you don’t use your frozen eggs or have some left over after starting your family, you may be able to donate them to a family in need. You may also be able to donate them to research. Some individuals prefer to dispose of their unused eggs.
