Our Expert Team is Here for You

It can be stressful navigating the expenses involved in fertility care, but NYULFC is here to make it as smooth and seamless an experience as possible. Our expert team will help you:

  • Verify and maximize insurance benefits: We know insurance can be confusing, so our financial counselors will help you fully understand your coverage before embarking on any tests or treatments. We participate with several major insurance carriers and fertility benefits programs, and will help you figure out the best course of action for your circumstances.

  • Choose the best financing program: Many of our patients pursue financing to make the costs of fertility care more manageable. These programs may allow for payment plans, loans, and other options to help make your goal of parenthood a reality.

The costs involved in fertility care can range widely depending on various factors, including your specific insurance plan, any additional fertility benefits you may have, whether you’re in a state with a fertility coverage mandate, what type of procedures and care you may require, and much more. Our caring, knowledgeable team will be by your side every step of the way.

Please note that the costs outlined here apply only to patients who do not have insurance coverage for fertility treatments. The team at NYU Langone Fertility Center will work closely with you to identify possible coverage and alternative financing options to meet your needs.

IVF Costs

It’s crucial to fully understand all the potential costs that may be involved in vitro fertilization (IVF), whether you’re pursuing it with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) or without. We provide full transparency around IVF costs at the outset of the process.

  • (Inclusive of ultrasounds and blood monitoring, retrieval, conventional insemination, embryo culture, embryo biopsy, cryopreservation of embryos, and 1 year of storage)

  • (Inclusive of ultrasounds and blood monitoring, retrieval, conventional insemination, embryo culture, embryo transfer, cryopreservation of embryos, and 1 year of storage)

  • IVF costs in New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area will depend on several different factors, such as whether you pursue genetic testing, the medications you take and how long you take them, any additional testing or procedures you may require, and how many cycles you do. In New York City, a cycle of IVF without PGT starts at $17,600 on average, and a cycle with PGT starts around $20,400 on average. Medications are not included in these estimates.

Egg Freezing Costs

Egg freezing allows women to store their eggs for future use to build their families. Some women freeze their eggs simply to provide themselves with options going forward, and some do so for medical reasons — for example, before beginning chemotherapy. We’ll work with you to go over all costs involved in egg freezing.

  • (Inclusive of ultrasounds and blood monitoring, retrieval, cryopreservation of retrieved oocytes, and 1 year of storage)

  • Egg freezing costs in New York City will depend on whether you take medications or require other procedures or tests. Some patients choose to freeze their eggs for just a few months, while others may keep them frozen in storage for many years; since many facilities charge an annual fee for storage, longer-term storage can add to total costs.

IUI Costs

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), in which sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation to increase the chances of becoming pregnant, is typically a more affordable fertility treatment.

  • (Tiered depending on the number of monitoring visits, inclusive of sperm wash, and insemination)

  • Though more affordable than other fertility treatments, the cost of IUI treatment in New York City can range widely depending on whether you take fertility medications, use donor sperm, or require bloodwork or other tests. On average, IUI typically costs between $1,267.50 and $4,692.50 in New York City.

FET Costs

A frozen embryo transfer (FET) is often done after completing IVF. This quick outpatient procedure involves thawing frozen embryos and transferring them to the uterus in order to achieve pregnancy. Our knowledgeable financial counselors will help you navigate these costs with care.

  • (Inclusive of ultrasound monitoring, embryo thaw and prep, and embryo transfer)

  • On average, an FET procedure in New York City usually starts at $5,500. This is not inclusive of fertility medications, IVF cycles, embryo storage, genetic testing, or other aspects of care you may undergo. NYULFC works closely with patients to ensure they understand all expenses involved and helps them create a plan of action for payment.

What Affects the Cost of Fertility Treatment?

Fertility treatments can differ for each patient and will depend on a variety of factors. The experienced, expert team at NYU Langone Fertility Center will guide you through all financial elements so you can feel secure and comfortable with the journey ahead. Some key factors affecting total fertility treatment costs include:

  • Treatment type: IVF, egg freezing, IUI, embryo transfer, use of donor eggs or sperm, and other treatments all come at different price points. In general, less complex treatments like IUI tend to be less expensive.

  • Number of cycles completed: Many patients undergo multiple rounds of IVF or egg freezing to achieve their desired outcome for building their families. Because each cycle incurs its own expenses, the total costs may end up higher.

  • Fertility medications used: Depending on your fertility goals and medical needs, you may take certain medications to stimulate egg production, prepare your uterus for embryo transfer, or trigger ovulation. The type, dosage, and duration of these medications can all impact final cost.

  • Use of donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier: Using donor eggs or donor sperm, or working with a gestational carrier to help you grow your family, can add substantially to the total cost of fertility treatment.

  • Lab services and add-ons: Advanced laboratory services — such as genetic testing, egg or embryo freezing and storage, semen analysis, and more — can raise overall treatment costs.

  • Insurance coverage vs. out-of-pocket status: Out-of-pocket costs will vary based on the specifics of your insurance plan. While some policies cover a broad range of fertility services and treatments, others may offer limited benefits or none at all. If you’ll be paying out of pocket, all aspects of care will need to be accounted for.

Fertility Treatment Cost FAQs

  • Whether IVF is covered by insurance in New York City will depend on the type of plan you have. Some plans may cover most, or even all, of treatment while others may offer minimal coverage or none.

In New York, a statewide mandate requires large-group insurance plans to cover the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, including three cycles of IVF with fresh or frozen embryo transfer. Keep in mind, however, that self-insured employers are exempt, as are public programs like Medicare and Medicaid. Aside from a diagnosis of infertility, this mandate may apply in other medically necessary situations as well. Be sure to review your policy carefully and get in touch with your insurance provider or HR department to understand exactly what’s included in your benefits.

At NYULFC, our financial coordinators will help you verify your insurance coverage and make the most of any fertility benefits you may have, guiding you through available financing options to make treatment more accessible.

  • Some insurance plans will cover the cost of egg freezing, while others may not. Verify specifics with your insurance provider and, if you receive insurance through your employer, your HR department.

As with IVF, egg freezing is also covered under the New York statewide mandate that requires large-group insurance plans to cover medically necessary fertility preservation services, including egg freezing. Note that this mandate does not apply in every situation; for example, federal health plans, Medicaid and Medicare, employers with self-funded insurance (often large companies), are all exempt. Elective egg freezing, in which patients choose to freeze their eggs to delay family building rather than out of medical necessity, is also not covered under the New York mandate.

The team at NYULFC will help you confirm your coverage and work with you to ensure you can take full advantage of any benefits provided to you.

  • To find out if you have fertility coverage through your insurance, start by reviewing your plan and requesting any needed information from the provider. If you receive insurance through work, your employers’ HR department should also be able to provide you with details.

If you live in New York, you may benefit from the statewide fertility coverage mandate, which covers medically necessary treatments in certain situations. There are many exemptions, though, so be sure to review all information carefully.

  • Yes, you can use a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) to cover the costs of fertility treatments; these are considered eligible medical expenses. IVF, IUI, FET, genetic testing, and various medications and procedures can typically be paid for using HSA or FSA funds.

Rules around HSA/FSA use for fertility care can vary widely, however, so check with your provider about what is permitted. Long-term egg or sperm storage, for example, may not be covered.

  • The cost of IVF typically includes:

    • Initial appointments and diagnostic tests: Initial consultations and tests are done to assess overall fertility health and determine the best course of treatment.

    • Egg retrieval: Egg retrieval involves collecting eggs from the uterus for testing, fertilization, and/or frozen storage.

    • Fertilization: During the fertilization process, eggs and sperm are combined in a lab dish.

    • Embryo culture and monitoring: If successful fertilization occurs, the resulting embryos will be cultured and monitored for healthy development before transferring to the uterus or into frozen storage.

  • The cost of fertility treatments may increase if making use of donor eggs or donor sperm. The donation process can be fairly complex both practically and emotionally, encompassing comprehensive screenings for donors, various medical processes for retrieval and transfer, and important legal aspects. This multi-step process can add significantly to overall fertility costs.

At NYULFC, we’re proud to have helped thousands of patients realize their dreams of parenthood through egg and sperm donation. Leveraging the latest, most cutting-edge technologies and a diverse pool of healthy donors, our expert Third Party Reproduction team will guide you through all the financial aspects of this unique journey.

  • Yes, NYULFC can help you navigate patient financing programs to help cover the cost of your fertility care. This can make the expenses involved in IVF, IUI, egg freezing, genetic testing, egg and sperm donation, and other treatments more manageable, with the possibility for payment plans and loans.

  • The number of IVF cycles required to achieve pregnancy can vary greatly from individual to individual. Some may conceive after just one or two cycles, while others may require several to achieve their goals. Each cycle incurs its own fees, so undergoing multiple cycles may increase overall costs. Our dedicated financial counselors can help you navigate these expenditures and confirm your benefits and insurance coverage.

  • Because fertility medications are not usually covered in the cost of treatments, they can add significantly to expenditures. Some insurance plans may cover medications, but if you’re paying out of pocket, you may want to look into ways to save. Comparing pharmacy prices, researching compassionate care and manufacturer discount programs, and using coupons and savings cards can all help bring down costs. Our team will help you look into these options and identify the best path forward.

  • Undergoing preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) can add to your total cost of fertility treatment, as these tests — such as PGT for aneuploidy (PGT-A), PGT for monogenic gene defects (PGT-M), and PGT for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR) — come with separate fees. In some cases, these are covered fully or in part by insurance. Be aware that the type of test, number of conditions being tested for, and number of embryos being tested can all raise prices.
